Labour

The birth of the Industrial Revolution sometime in the 1780s England also gave rise to the capitalist economy. Prior to that, there was no mass labour movement to speak of. Labour movements came into being as a reaction of the perceived abuses under capitalism. Very low wages, inhuman or sweatshop working conditions, unsafe working environments, and sexual abuse of women workers were just some of the catalogue of unjust treatments committed by industrial capitalists. The birth of the labour movement was a natural reaction to improve the dismal working conditions of the workers. Although technical and scientific innovations and specifically the huge improvement in the steam engine drove the Industrial Revolution, the treatment of labourers failed to keep pace in humanitarian terms. Unionism was a logical step in the fight for workers’ rights such as the imposition of minimum wage laws, banning of child labour and the introduction of maximum working hours per week.
