This is a right given or granted to authors of original written works such as stageplays and books. Although not standard, the usual copyright period for authorship of the original material is between fifty and one hundred years. This protection is to encourage people to create original material that enriches society as a whole with their artistic creativity without worrying whether their efforts will be in vain. The whole idea is to make original authors earn money from their work as their source of livelihood. This is to make writing into a profession although copyright was initially conceived as a form of government censorship. Protection by copyright extends also to other material such as original music, films, and software. The rise of the Internet and other digital media has made copyright protection often problematic.
