Booksellers
The imposition of taxes on books has always been of much controversy. The formation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has long been vigorously opposed, but calls for exemption were not acknowledged by the government. A body then came to represent both booksellers and publishers, and thereby provided a more concerted thrust in marketing the book trade. Booksellers have opposed “tax on knowledge” since the 19th century. In fact, in 1987, a 10% tax on imported books was reinstated during a trade dispute but was then eliminated after the outcry of the book industry. Lastly, a campaign against the inclusion of the books under the GST has been initiated by the publishing industry and the reading public believing that the added cost would limit book availability to the public.
